Cooperation between TBRI, Beaujoun hospital, Paris Cite University and Cairo University
As part of the ongoing cooperation between Egypt and France in scientific and medical research, the cooperation agreement between Theodore Bilharz Research Institute and the French Beaujon Hospital was renewed for the fourth time, with the participation of the Faculty of Medicine – Cairo University and Université Paris Cité, on July 11, 2023.
The first agreement dates back to 2007 and was renewed in 2012 and 2017. Over the years, this collaboration has led to many achievements in scientific and medical fields through scientific meetings and workshops focused on the use of modern techniques related to the digestive system, liver, and endoscopy. These activities featured leading experts and professors in gastroenterology and hepatology from both Egypt and France, in addition to joint research efforts.
Since 2007, twelve annual scientific meetings have been held between Beaujon Hospital and the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Theodore Bilharz Research Institute. These meetings were led by top professors in the fields of liver and digestive system diseases from both countries. Moreover, Beaujon Hospital has hosted 21 physicians and researchers from Theodore Bilharz Institute for training in radiology, immunology, molecular biology, pathology, hepatology, microbiology, and clinical chemistry. In addition, fifteen joint research papers have been published in international journals in collaboration with various departments at both Beaujon Hospital and Theodore Bilharz Research Institute.
Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, affirmed that the renewal of this agreement reflects the ministry's ongoing efforts to enhance international cooperation in scientific research and to broaden opportunities for Egyptian researchers in advanced fields such as medicine and health sciences, in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030.
The Minister pointed out that the collaboration with the French side represents a successful model of long-term scientific partnership that contributes to knowledge transfer and the training of specialized personnel. It also helps in addressing shared health challenges between the two countries, especially in the areas of chronic diseases and liver research.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Raai, Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Theodore Bilharz Research Institute and the general coordinator of the agreement, emphasized that the continued cooperation with the French side has resulted in many initiatives that have benefited researchers in both countries. He noted that the upcoming phase will see strengthened collaboration in new and integrated research areas.
