Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department

About Department
-
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department has a long history in the field of molecular biology since 1981, when Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ali Saber started to establish molecular biology trends and facilities in the biochemistry lab.
Mission
The mission of our department is to maximize the benefits of bioscience and biotechnology to our institute, environment and nation by being an excellent quality, comprehensive, multidisciplinary research, training and services center, that coordinates, disseminates and advances biotechnology and its applications for the benefit of society and human health. This will be through continuous learning to enhance the knowledge and skills that are of value to our staff.
Vision
Attain significant research heights and recognition as leader Molecular biology, genetic engineering, biotechnology and Nanobiotechnology research center. Shaping this research into innovative applicable tools for generation of knowledge, processes and products for benefit of the society and nation.

Services
For more than 20 years, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department has introduced wide scope of services for society, scientific community and organizations. Three major services have been carried out:
- Molecular diagnosis of diseases and Pathogens for in and out patients (see Routine out & in patients services),
- Workshops and training (see Training facilities).
- scientific services
-
-
- Isolation of genetic material.
- Design of PCR primers and PCR amplification.
- DNA and protein electrophoresis.
- Gene isolation, cloning, protein expression and protein purification.
- Guiding graduation projects students in the field of nano-biotechnology
- Investigation of the cytotoxicity of nanoparticles, drugs and compounds
- The Molecular Diagnostic Unit in Biochemistry and molecular Biology Department serve the molecular diagnosis of hepatitis viruses and other viruses, in addition to pathogenic bacteria, using polymerase chain Reaction (PCR), real time PCR, reverse hybridization and other techniques for qualitative and quantitative assay for in and out patients. The following assays are available.
1- HCV-RNA (Quantitative)
2- HCV-RNA (Qualitative)
3- HBV-DNA by PCR (Quantitative)
4- HBV-DNA by PCR (Qualitative)

Training
Biochemistry and Molecular biology Department at TBRI had kept steady record for holding local, national and international training workshops (hands on) in different aspects of molecular biology, biotechnology and Nanobiotecnology as follows:
- Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department is considered by WHO as reference training center for African and Arabian countries concerning molecular diagnosis of infectious diseases
- Training courses in principles of molecular biology.
- Organizing workshops on molecular forensic diagnosis.
- Workshops on real time PCR.
- Workshops on Nanotechniques.
- Workshops in recombinant protein expression in E. Coli systems.
- In collaboration with universites, selected graduation research projects have been conducted at Biochemistry and Molecular biology Dept., TBRI.
Customized training workshops can be organized in many other different fields for groups.
