Egypt and China Renew Their Scientific Partnership through the Collaboration between "Theodor Bilharz Research Institute" and "Wuhan University" to Combat Endemic Diseases

In a step that reflects the depth of scientific relations between Egypt and China, and as a continuation of a joint cooperation that has already yielded promising research achievements, Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI) and Wuhan University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at renewing and deepening their academic and research collaboration. The agreement was signed by Prof. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Director of TBRI, and Prof. Youfeng Yuan, Vice President of Wuhan University, reaffirming both parties’ commitment to expanding cooperation in fields of mutual interest and unifying efforts to confront health challenges, foremost among them the fight against endemic diseases that pose a threat to public health in many developing countries.
This signing builds upon a partnership that began in December 2019, when the first MoU focused on studying intermediate snail hosts of schistosomiasis and testing molluscicides as a means to combat the spread of the disease. The new agreement marks a significant step forward in the collaboration between the two institutions, including the establishment of a joint research laboratory at Wuhan University dedicated to studying schistosomiasis and its snail hosts. The agreement also includes the exchange of researchers and the organization of joint scientific symposia and conferences.
Additionally, the MoU encourages joint scientific publications in international journals, contributing to enhancing the scientific research capabilities of both parties. The coordination of this collaboration will be led by Dr. Mohamed Ramadan Habib, Acting Head of the Medical Malacology Department at TBRI, and Dr. Qin-Ping Zhao from Wuhan University.
Prof. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Director of Theodor Bilharz Research Institute, expressed his great pleasure in renewing the scientific partnership with Wuhan University, affirming that this agreement represents an exemplary model of international cooperation in the service of scientific research and addressing shared health challenges.
He emphasized that such partnerships directly contribute to strengthening the position of scientific research in Egypt and supporting the Institute’s efforts to combat endemic diseases. He also confirmed that this agreement opens new horizons for young researchers to gain expertise and engage with the latest global research developments, thereby enhancing their skills and motivating them towards innovation.
Dr. Abdel Aziz further noted that the Institute places the establishment of solid international cooperation relationships at the forefront of its priorities, based on knowledge exchange and expertise transfer, believing in the importance of scientific openness and its pivotal role in advancing Egypt’s research and healthcare systems.
