Theodor Bilharz Research Institute Organizes Specialized Workshop in Urological Surgery in Collaboration with the Egyptian Urological Association
On Sunday, April 6, 2025, Theodor Bilharz Research Institute organized an advanced and specialized workshop in urological surgery, in collaboration with the Egyptian Urological Association. The event was held under the patronage of Prof. Hassan Abou El-Einen, President of the Association, and Prof. Sherif Mourad, the Association’s Secretary General. It was supervised by Prof. Mohamed Hussein Badawy, Head of the Urology Department at the Institute.
The workshop was attended by a distinguished group of urology professors from various Egyptian and international universities. Its scientific program featured specialized lectures and live broadcasts of advanced surgeries.
This workshop comes as part of the Institute's continuous efforts to promote ongoing medical training for physicians and provide a scientific platform to discuss the latest developments and techniques in urological surgery. The sessions included in-depth scientific discussions and live surgical demonstrations, offering participants a unique opportunity to stay up-to-date with the latest scientific advancements and acquire advanced practical skills through real-time observation of intricate surgical procedures.
The workshop commenced with an opening lecture by Prof. Hassan Shaker, Professor of Urology at Ain Shams University and Head of the Endoscopy Division at the Egyptian Urological Association, titled: "TURP-like laser ablation of the prostate: A paradigm shift in the treatment of BPH", addressing the latest approaches in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia using laser technology.
The program also included several live advanced surgeries. Prof. Hazem El-Mansi, Professor and Director of the Urology Fellowship Program at Northern Ontario School of Medicine in Canada, performed a laser prostate enucleation surgery (Prostate TFL Laser Enucleation) and delivered a lecture on: "Anatomical Endoscopic Enucleation of the Prostate (AEEP) – A New Paradigm", discussing different laser applications in stone fragmentation and prostate enucleation.
Dr. Louay Abbas, Assistant Researcher in Urology at Theodor Bilharz Research Institute, also took part in the workshop by performing a Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS)—an advanced kidney stone removal procedure.
The live surgeries concluded with a Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) performed in the supine position by Prof. Ahmed Alioa, Professor of Urology at Zagazig University.
The workshop welcomed a number of prominent experts in the field, including Prof. Ehab Rifaat Tawfik (Minia University), Prof. Mohamed El-Shazly (Menoufia University), Associate Prof. Mohamed Kamal Omar (Menoufia University), Prof. Mahmoud Shokry (Fayoum University), Prof. Salah Zidan (Al-Azhar University for Girls), Prof. Mohamed El-Atreby (El Sahel Teaching Hospital), as well as notable members of Theodor Bilharz Research Institute’s Urology Department, such as Prof. Ahmed El-Baz, Prof. Ahmed Ismail, Prof. Tarek El-Laithi, and Prof. Mamdouh Roshdy, who all contributed their expertise to enrich the scientific discussions and exchange insights with participants.
The attendees highly praised the workshop for its advanced scientific content and hands-on applications, which fostered experience-sharing and skill enhancement. The event reaffirmed Theodor Bilharz Research Institute’s leading role in supporting continuing medical education and specialized surgical training.
