Theodor Bilharz Research Institute Organizes Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Workshop under the Patronage of the Egyptian Society of Surgeons
As part of its commitment to supporting continuous medical education and enhancing the skills of surgeons across various specialties, Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI), under the leadership of Professor Dr. Ahmed Abdelaziz, Director of the Institute and Chairman of the Board of Directors, organized the Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Workshop within the “Meet & Ask the Expert” series for the eighth consecutive year, under the auspices of the Egyptian Society of Surgeons.
The workshop served as a preparatory event for the 43rd Annual Conference of the Egyptian Society of Surgeons. It featured four scientific sessions accompanied by live-broadcast surgical procedures performed in the Institute’s operating theaters, including:
“CBD Exploration” presented by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Shoukry,
“Nissen Fundoplication” for reflux correction presented by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdelaziz,
“TAPP Inguinal Hernia Repair” presented by Prof. Dr. Hesham El-Meligy,
“Transoral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy Vestibular Approach (TOETVA)” presented by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Zidan.
The workshop was supervised by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdelaziz (Director of TBRI), Prof. Dr. Mohamed Said (Head of the Surgical Clinical Research Division, TBRI), and Prof. Dr. Hesham El-Meligy (Head of the General Surgery Department at TBRI).
The event witnessed a strong turnout from senior surgery professors and members of the Egyptian Society of Surgeons, along with a large number of young doctors from various Egyptian universities and hospitals. The interactive sessions provided participants with the opportunity to discuss the challenges faced in complex surgical procedures, engage directly with experts, and gain exposure to the latest surgical instruments and techniques used internationally in the field of advanced laparoscopy.
In his address, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdelaziz emphasized that organizing this workshop falls within the framework of a comprehensive strategic plan adopted by TBRI, aiming to establish the Institute as a recognized regional center of excellence and training in hepatobiliary, gastrointestinal, oncologic, and advanced minimally invasive surgery, seeking advancement of healthcare sector while providing high-quality educational, training, and research services that meet present challenges and future aspirations. He added that the Institute is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including five operating rooms furnished with the latest surgical devices and laparoscopic systems, making it an ideal environment for conducting such workshops and live surgeries.
He further highlighted that the “Meet & Ask the Expert” workshop series, organized periodically by the Institute, seeks to prepare a new generation of surgeons capable of handling the most complex cases while keeping pace with rapid global developments in surgery. He stressed that the Institute’s role extends beyond patient care, serving as a prominent educational and research hub that enriches the scientific community both within Egypt and abroad.
Prof. Dr. Abdelaziz concluded by affirming that this workshop is not merely a scientific event but a clear message reflecting TBRI’s commitment to fulfilling its pioneering role in supporting scientific research and continuous medical training, while strengthening Egypt’s position on the regional and international map of medical and surgical education.
