As part of its commitment to promoting continuous medical education and its leading role in developing physicians’ skills and transferring advanced surgical expertise across various medical specialties, Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI), under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Director of TBRI and Chairman of the Board, organized a specialized workshop entitled “Radical Cystectomy Workshop” on Sunday, October 12, 2025, in collaboration with the Egyptian Urological Association (EUA). The event featured the participation of a distinguished group of eminent professors of urological surgery from across Egypt.

The workshop was held under the scientific sponsorship of Prof. Dr. Hassan Aboul-Enein, President of the Egyptian Urological Association, and Prof. Dr. Sherif Mourad, General Secretary of the Association. It was supervised by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Hussein Badawy, Head of the Urology Department at TBRI, and Prof. Dr. Mohamed Said, Head of the Surgical Clinical Research Division at TBRI, with the active participation of both the Urology Department team and the Anesthesia Department team led by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Zidan.

The event witnessed broad participation from leading experts and professors in urological surgery, including Prof. Dr. Akram El-Marakby, Head of the Urology Department at Beni Suef University, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Fahem, Professor of Urology at Al-Azhar University, and Prof. Dr. Ahmed El-Baz, Professor of Urological Surgery at TBRI.

The workshop also featured the attendance of an elite group of urological surgery professors from various Egyptian and international universities. The scientific program included specialized lectures as well as live transmissions of advanced surgical procedures.

This workshop comes as part of TBRI’s ongoing efforts to promote continuous medical training for physicians, facilitate the exchange of expertise among specialists, and provide a scientific platform to discuss the latest developments and technologies in urological surgery. It also aims to train doctors in the most advanced surgical techniques, reinforcing the institute’s position as a leading research and academic center in Egypt and the region.

The workshop included specialized scientific sessions and live surgical demonstrations, providing participants with a unique opportunity to observe the latest scientific advancements in the field and to acquire hands-on experience through direct observation of complex surgical procedures performed throughout the day.

The workshop began with a specialized lecture by Prof. Dr. Tarek Osman, Head of the Urology Department at Ain Shams University and Head of the Uro-oncology Section of the Egyptian Urological Association, entitled “Radical Cystectomy in Females: How I Do It?”, in which he discussed the most recent surgical approaches to radical cystectomy in female patients.

This was followed by a live broadcast of an advanced radical cystectomy surgery performed on a male patient by Prof. Dr. Hassan Aboul-Enein, providing attendees with the opportunity to follow each surgical step closely and engage in detailed discussion of the procedure.

The workshop concluded with a panel discussion addressing the latest advancements in radical cystectomy techniques. Attendees praised the workshop for its advanced scientific content and practical application, which fostered the exchange of expertise, enhanced participants’ surgical skills, and reaffirmed TBRI’s pioneering role in supporting continuous medical education and specialized surgical training.

In an exclusive statement, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Director of TBRI and Chairman of the Board, emphasized that organizing this workshop reflects the institute’s commitment to fulfilling its academic and research mission by training medical professionals in the latest advanced surgical techniques. He highlighted that continued collaboration with scientific associations strengthens the exchange of expertise across generations and consolidates TBRI’s role as a center of excellence in medical education and scientific research in Egypt and the Arab region.

He further added that hands-on experience through workshops and live surgeries is one of the most crucial pillars of professional development for young physicians and significantly contributes to enhancing the efficiency of the healthcare system—ultimately benefiting Egyptian patients.
