Biography
Prof. Magda Azmy is an Emeritus Professor of Clinical and Chemical Pathology at the Electron Microscopy Department, Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI), Egypt. She received her M.B., B.Ch. from Cairo University in 1980, followed by an M.Sc. in 1989 and an M.D. in 2010. With over four decades of experience, she has worked in clinical diagnostics, microscopy training, and postgraduate supervision. Prof. Magda participated in more than 25 conferences and workshops, including ECCMID and ASIDA events, covering infection control, diagnostic imaging, and microbiology. She has published over 15 scientific papers addressing bacterial biofilms, antimicrobial resistance, and nanoparticle-related pathologies. She supervised several M.Sc. theses on microbial infections and biofilm formation. Prof. Magda is a member of ESCMID, ASIDA, and ESLM and has been involved in organizing and lecturing in institutional training programs at TBRI related to microscopy and infectious disease research.
Research Fields
Prof. Magda’s research integrates clinical pathology and microbiology with electron microscopy applications. Her work examines bacterial biofilms on catheters and tracheal tubes, focusing on structure, clinical implications, and resistance patterns. She has studied antibiotic response in multidrug-resistant bacteria such as MRSA and A. baumannii, using time-kill and ultrastructural analysis. She contributed to electron microscopy-based diagnostics for schistosomiasis, gastrointestinal infections, and Blastocystis hominis. Additional research explored the presence of nanoparticles like aluminum and barium in renal and biliary stones. Prof. Magda’s approach merges imaging with diagnostic and therapeutic microbiology to study microbial behavior, improve visualization of host-pathogen interactions, and support more accurate infection-related clinical decisions.
