Biography
Dr. Hoda Helmy is a graduate of faculty of medicine Cairo university, Egypt (M.B.B.Ch., 1981) & completed her post-graduate studies in microbiology and immunology (M.Sc., 1985 & M.D.,1993) at faculty of medicine Cairo university. She joined work at Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI) 1983. She has extensive experience in establishing the routine laboratory work and education programs at microbiology department at TBRI. Her basic scientific work has focused on identification & antibiotic sensitivity pattern of bacteria to establish the implementation of local antibiotic policy. During her work at AL- Jahra Hospital, Ministry Of Health (MOH), Kuwait she was assigned as a head of laboratory department & head of the following committees ( infection control ,antibiotic usage, safety and risk management). Also, a head of self-assessment team of the Canadian Accreditation Program & member of microbiology committee. Current position is Emeritus Professor Microbiology, TBRI.
Research Fields
Areas of interest in basic research include: bacteriology, virology & Immunology. Her clinical research deals with organisms isolated from clinical samples & its resistance to antibiotics (e,g. Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Enterococci, Brucella, Campylobacter, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Salmonella, Clostridium difficile, Helicobacter pylori & Acinetobacter).Candida species and antifungal susceptibility profile. Molecular study of antibiotic resistance of organisms (e,g. Metallo-ß-Lactamases And Extended Spectrum ß-Lactamases ESBL), Molecular typing (Phenotypic & genotypic) of isolated organisms during outbreaks.
