Biography
Gehan L. Abuelenain is a Professor at Parasitology Department with a Ph.D. in Immunology and Parasitology from the Joint University of San Francisco/Cairo University. Her research journey centered on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying infectious diseases, particularly parasitic intestinal diseases. Over three decades, she served Theodor Bilharz Research Institute in Egypt in several positions which provided her with the opportunity to lead advanced research initiatives in epidemiology and disease prevention, with a particular focus on developing innovative diagnostic tools for early disease detection. Prof. Abuelenain's research studies has resulted in multiple published papers in high-impact journals, demonstrating her commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and contributing to the global scientific community. She is highly accomplished scientist who cultivated several prestegious rewards such as WHO Young Scientist Award/Distinguished Teaching/Research Awards.
Research Fields
Medical Parasitology is my focal research field that encompasses the study of intestinal and infectious parasites, delving into their biology, epidemiology, pathology, and control strategies. Within this broad discipline, I focus on÷ specialized areas of specific parasitic organisms. Helminthology is dedicated to the study of parasitic worms, including intestinal nematodes like Trichinella spiralis, which causes trichinellosis, and trematodes such as various Schistosoma species, responsible for schistosomiasis. Protozoology, on the other hand, investigates parasitic protozoa, with significant attention paid to apicomplexan parasites like Toxoplasma gondii and cryptosporidium parvum. These fields often intersect with immunology to understand host-parasite interactions and develop vaccines, with pharmacology for antiparasitic drug development, and with public health and epidemiology to implement effective prevention and control programs globally.
