Professor Fathia Gawish is a distinguished Egyptian scientist and academic in the field of Medical Malacology. With over four decades of dedicated service, she has played a pivotal role in advancing parasitological and environmental health research in Egypt, particularly in relation to schistosomiasis and snail-borne diseases. Professor Gawish began her professional career on May 1, 1978, at the Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI)—a leading national center for research on parasitic diseases. She rose through the ranks of academia to become Professor of Malacology on September 25, 2009, and was later honored as Professor Emeritus, a title she holds to this day. She was a Head of the Medical Malacology Department from February 1, 2013, to August 20, 2014, where she led research initiatives and departmental development in the Environmental Research and Medical Malacology Division. Her work has significantly contributed to the understanding and control of disease-transmitting snails in Egypt, especially in the context of schistosomiasis, a major public health concern. Throughout her career, Professor Gawish has been known for her scientific rigor, mentorship of junior researchers, and collaborative projects aimed at environmental disease control. Her leadership and academic contributions have helped shape national policies in disease ecology and vector control.
