TBRI Signs Cooperation Protocol with Badr University in Cairo to Enhance Education, Scientific Research, and Community Service

As part of the strategic plan of Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI) to deepen institutional partnerships and strengthen collaboration with Egyptian universities, the institute has signed a joint academic and scientific cooperation protocol with Badr University in Cairo (BUC). The agreement aims to support education, training, scientific research, and community service.

The protocol was signed by Prof. Ashraf El-Sheehy, President of Badr University in Cairo and former Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Prof. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Acting Director of Theodor Bilharz Research Institute. The agreement was coordinated by Prof.  Mahmoud Fahmy, Vice President for Scientific Research at BUC, and Assoc. Prof. Safia Samir, Assistant Professor in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department at TBRI.

The signing ceremony was attended by a high-level delegation from TBRI, including Prof. Sanaa Thabet, Prof. Ahmed El-Baz, Prof. Tarek Abou Shousha, Prof. Eman El-Ahwany, Prof. Ola Mahmoud, Prof.  El-Sayed Saleh, Prof. Ahmed Azzam, Prof. Rabab Sayed, Assoc. Prof. Sami Nasr, Assoc. Prof. Hagar Fathy, Ms. Mai Mohamed Reda, Mr. Ahmed Magdy, and Mr. Mohamed Reda. The institutional presence reflected the institute’s commitment to fostering academic collaboration and openness to fruitful research partnerships.

The event also witnessed the participation of several deans and vice deans, as well as a group of faculty members from Badr University, lending the occasion a distinguished academic character and a spirit of constructive interaction between the two institutions.

The signing of this protocol reflects the shared commitment of both parties to scientific and research integration, and to working together to nurture a new generation of researchers in the medical and health fields. These researchers will embrace scientific advancement while maintaining environmental integrity, leveraging the modern training and research tools possessed by both institutions. The collaboration aims to prepare outstanding young professionals with deep knowledge of their fields in a cooperative environment that values equity and institutional exchange.

The protocol outlines cooperation across all scientific fields, with a focus on joint research projects, co-publication in local and international journals, exchange of researchers and specialists, joint organization of workshops, conferences, and scientific events, as well as training for postgraduate students and recent graduates—particularly in areas such as liver and kidney transplantation, gastroenterology, hepatology, and urology. It also includes organizing medical and awareness campaigns in the areas surrounding both institutions and in underserved regions, and sharing expertise and technical support in the areas of quality and accreditation, especially concerning the requirements of the General Authority for Healthcare Accreditation and Regulation, among other vital areas of mutual interest.

In this context, Prof. Ahmed Abdel Aziz emphasized that this collaboration aligns closely with the core mission of Theodor Bilharz Research Institute, one of Egypt’s most prestigious research institutions, which is keen to open avenues of partnership with universities to support applied scientific research and community service.

He added that the institute’s administration continuously strives to build strategic alliances with visionary universities and institutions, expanding opportunities for joint training and research. This contributes to preparing researchers who are both scientifically and socially competent, and provides a comprehensive educational environment that combines theoretical study with practical application, serving the goals of sustainable development. He also expressed his appreciation for Badr University’s role in supporting this collaboration, noting its outstanding academic environment and clear focus on advancing scientific research and improving education quality.

The signing of this protocol is rooted in TBRI’s belief that integration between educational and research institutions enhances their societal role in addition to their research functions. This is achieved through the adoption of health awareness initiatives and the direct provision of services to the community. Such strategic partnerships serve as genuine gateways to applying scientific knowledge in addressing societal challenges, thereby contributing to the advancement of health and scientific standards in Egyptian society, and embodying the dual humanitarian and scientific mission of the institute.
