Mission

Conducting innovative research, providing cutting-edge evidence-based solutions, and forming networks through collaborating with stakeholders to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of liver and kidney diseases, particularly those prevalent in Egypt and the region. Our mission is to reduce the burden of these diseases, enhance public health, and contribute to a healthier future for all.

Vision

To be a  leader in public health research and innovation, dedicated to preventing, controlling, and eliminating liver and kidney diseases, particularly those endemic to Egypt and the region. We aim to improve the health and well-being of health service seekers and providers through evidence-based research, capacity building, and community engagement.

Research Fields

This field encompasses a broad range of research areas, including:

Core Areas:

• Epidemiology and Surveillance: Studying the distribution, patterns, and determinants of liver and kidney diseases and other endemic diseases of concern. 
• Clinical Research: Conducting clinical trials to evaluate the efficacy and safety of new treatments and interventions.
• Supporting cutting edge research: conducting rigorous scientific research, employing both quantitative and qualitative methods to gain a comprehensive understanding of public health issue.
• Health Services Research: Assessing the quality, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness of healthcare services related diseases within the institutes research agenda.
• Health Economics: Analyzing the economic burden of diseases of concern and evaluating the cost-effectiveness of interventions.

• Global Health: Collaborating with international partners to address global health challenges by focusing on these areas, the Public Health Department can make significant contributions to improving the health of individuals and communities, both locally and globally.

Structure

• The department is well equipped with all the facilities needed for field research studies, one portable ultrasonography, three microscopes, refrigerator, deep freezer and two desktop computers.
• Three rooms are available in the PHD, in addition to one outpatient room for health education activities and field unit in Gazeret Mohamed village (Warrak District) equipped with all facilities need for field research work.

Training

Conducting training courses on the following subjects:

1. Research methodology.
2. Qualitative research in health problems.
3. Epidemiology of schistosomiasis, fascioliasis, viral hepatitis and emerging infectious diseases.
4. Establishment, monitoring and evaluation of disease control programs.
5. Establishment of sound medical record system.
6. Establishment and use of modern tools in hospital management, quality assurance of medical services and nutritional services.

Achievements

• Publication of more than fifty researches in international and national journals
• Participation in THEBERA project funded by European Commission (2010-2014)
• Participation in 3 internally funded projects (2012-2016).
• Participation in 6 internationally funded projects and 5 internally funded (1988-2016)
• Supervision of health education unit, field research unit in Gezerit Mohamed, quality control unit, and ex-medical records unit of the hospital, and heading of occupational health and safety committee.
• Preparing and acquiring degrees of masters and Doctorate degree of Public Health (22 masters and 13 doctorates).
• Organization and coordination of an Outreach community project at "Geziret Mohammed"
  village Sept. 2023.

• Challenges on eradication of schistosomiasis in Egypt, held in National tropical institute, on the day of Egypt free of schistosomiasis 2008.

• The Public Health Department plays a vital role in the development of hospital services.
• Supervision on the team responsible for monitoring the implementation of digital transformation
• Leading the Healthcare Quality Unit, aiming to improve healthcare standards and ensure quality patient care.
• Engagement in the Infection Control Unit at the hospital, contributing to enhancing patient safety and infection prevention protocols.
