Hematology Department

About Department

  • The hematology and blood bank department focuses its research on uncovering the underlying causes and mechanisms of endemic diseases that primarily impact the gastrointestinal tract and liver. Its scope includes disease diagnosis, monitoring prognosis, guiding treatment decisions and providing the highest standard quality blood and blood components for emergency and routine medical requirements.

Mission

  • Improvement of health care and curative services through new technologies and advanced diagnostic services in the fields of hematology, blood banking, cellular and transfusion medicine to meet both routine and emergency needs.
  • To provide accurate laboratory results within appropriate turnaround time to meet satisfaction of care providers and patients.
  • To provide the highest standard quality blood and blood components for emergency and routine medical requirements.
  • To maintain and improvise the role of Hematology Department and Blood Bank in liver transplant procedure.
  • Organizing specific training courses for medical, paramedical and technical students.
  • Establishing an advanced coagulation unit concerned with the clinical setting of coagulopathy, bleeding disorders and factors deficiency.
  • Establishing a stem cell research lab to handle the new strategies of stem cell therapy especially with respect to differentiation into hepatocytes.
  • Upgrading the cell separation unit to include novel technologies for optimum transfusion therapy and future products marketing.
  • Designing a comprehensive plan for blood donation campaigns to provide abundant supply of blood groups and to transform the hematology blood bank unit into a larger one that can cover the entire vicinity of tbri.
  • Provision of highly qualified laboratory services that comply with the latest who regulations for laboratory quality management system (iso15189) to raise both patient and physician satisfaction.

Vision

  • To be a leading hematology laboratory and blood transfusion center in Egypt and the region, driving advancements in blood-related research, diagnostics and blood banking aiming to bridge the gap between science and clinical practice, enhancing the quality of care for patients in Egypt and beyond.

Structure

Research Laboratories
They are designed for the performance of research work, related scientific projects and theses. They comprise a cell culture unit and a stem cell unit.

Out-Patients Clinic Laboratories.
They provide the routine investigations required by both the out- and in-patients. The service runs on a 24-hour basis.

Blood Bank.
This unit is in charge of blood donation services to screen healthy donors for transfusion-transmitted viral and bacterial infections, to prepare blood and blood components (packed RBCs, fresh frozen plasma and platelet concentrates) and to provide necessary blood transfusion to emergency needs and patients undergoing surgery.

Techniques

    ·       Automated haemogram including complete blood count and blood film examination.

    ·       Semi-automated turbodensitometric method using magnetic beads for routine coagulation tests.

    ·       Automated technique using chronometric and photometric method to conduct specific tests for diagnosis of coagulation defects and monitoring anticoagulant therapy.

    ·       Blood grouping tests by slide method, tube method and column agglutination technique (CAT).

    ·       Compatibility tests using tube method and CAT.

    ·       Preparation of PRBC, fresh frozen plasma, platelet concentrates and other blood components.

    ·       ELISA techniques for detection of viral hepatitis markers (HBs Ag and HCV Ab) and HIV (Ag and Ab), assessment of iron profile (S. ferritin) and coagulation assay (D-dimer).

    ·       Chemilumenicence technique for instant determination of viral hepatitis markers (HBV and HCV), HIV, syphilis, iron profile (S. ferritin and S. iron) and coagulation assays (D-dimer).

    ·       Flowcytometric analysis for immunophenotypic detection of specific hematological and immunological surface markers.

    ·       Bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy.

    ·       Examination of blood smears for detection of haemoparasites.

    ·       Analysis of the acetic fluid.

    ·       Cell culture techniques.

Services

Service scope

·       The haematology out-patients’ clinic services encompass the services offered to out- and in-patients haematological diseases, especially those complaining of haematological abnormalities and haemostatic defects associated with chronic liver and kidney diseases.

·       Diagnosis and follow up of patients with coagulation defects and monitoring short and long term anticoagulant therapy using specific standard tests and INR evaluation.

·       Proper diagnostic and follow up tests needed for urologic and surgical patients are also performed. Patients with hypersplenism are thoroughly investigated and bone marrow examination is resorted to confirm the diagnosis.

·       The Blood Bank unit insures healthy donors screening for viral and bacterial markers, blood grouping and compatibility testing, preparation of blood and blood components and provision of necessary blood transfusion to emergency needs and patients undergoing surgery.

Medical services

·       Haematology Lab provide 24 hours services for prediction, diagnosis and follow up of hematological abnormalities and haemostatic defects associated with chronic hepatic and renal diseases. Hematological diseases such as disorders of red and white blood cells, platelets and coagulation defects and bleeding disorders are commonly encountered.

·       Complete blood count and examination of blood films.

·       Reticulocytic count.

·       ESR.

·       Coagulation profile (PT, PTT and factors assay).

·       Ascetic fluid analysis.

·       Bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy.

·       Examination of blood smears for detection of haemoparasites.

·       Blood grouping and compatibility tests.

·       Direct and indirect Coomb’s test.

.    Viral markers
